Top Hip-Hop Albums of 2017

Image
It has been some time since I sat in my writing chair, but as I sit here listening to Stevie Wonder's Fulfillingness' First Finale on vinyl, I realize 2017 has been a wonderful year in music. This year, I dove head first into the magnificent culture of record collecting with an aim to expand my musical horizons. I listened to upwards of 24,000 minutes of music (thanks Spotify) and have changed my musical listening habits quite a bit. I, now more than ever, listen to music in album length as opposed to song length; listening to and buying records has definitely catered to this musical listening style. In 2017, I have listened to at least 60 hip hop albums that dropped this year, and from those, I have created a list of my top 20. Because the albums I chose were all varied in style, message, and composition, it was difficult for me to rank them. To that end, I have chosen to rank my first top 10 and my next top 10. So, in no particular order here are my first top 10 Top ...

EDM Influenced HipHop

Image
Today, I bring to you a series of songs from a long awaited era of genre collaboration. These two genres are EDM and Hip-Hop/Rap.  For so long, we have seen and come across a number of remixes to Hip-Hop/Rap songs by DJ's in the EDM realm; but never an original song where the beat is produced by an EDM DJ and the lyrics from a rapper or Hip-Hop artist. We might have heard minor collaborations here and there from some way-too-underground-for-our-liking duos, but nothing really worthwhile. Not until Lil' Jon and DJ Snake came out with the infamous Turn Down For What and brought that kind of genre out of it's shell and into the light that is mainstream music.  Below, I offer a select variety of jams from recent years. Some are heavy on the EDM , easy on the rap, some are the opposite, and some that have just the right mix of both. But, they all have one thing in common, they're hype. 1. Zeds Dead - Back Home ft. Freddie Gibbs 2. Travi$ Scott - Whole Lotta Lovin...

Interview - Yazeed Jarrar

Today, I had the pleasure of interviewing someone who is very close to my heart, a person who has known me my whole life, a person that is as close as a brother to me, one of my favorite cousins and now DJ , Yazeed Jarrar.   Yazeed is one of the biggest fans of EDM music I have ever known, his knowledge of Techno/ Trance and House music ranges back to the inception of this genre and it can only be described as expansive. As of yesterday, Yazeed has finally decided to put this knowledge to perfect use and he released his debut full hour House set. It features tracks such as Dosem 's Beach Kisses (Joris Voorn Remix) , Booka Shade 's Regenerate and Carlo Lio 's Scylla and Breakfast In Bag . The mind-blowing part about it all is that it took him one try to get a quality mix such as this one. One where the transitions are next to seamless and all the songs coalesce together to create a masterful piece of one hour art. Please feel free to check it out below.  ...
