Album Review - Curren$y & Fuse - Spring Clean

Happy Juneteenth everyone! Today I will be reviewing Curren$y and Fuse's latest mixtape - Spring Clean. For those of you unaware, Fuse is a producer with 808 Mafia. Curren$y has always consistently produced with big name producers, and it is no surprise that his versatility and poise have enabled him to join forces with yet another big producer to create Spring Clean.

This 10-track tape by the New Orleans heavy hitter comes at a much needed time and without much notice as we are accustomed. Without further ado, let's jump into the tracks!

'Coast 2 Coast' sets us off with the infamous Curren$y steez dripping with his flows, 'my hotel room got a basketball court in it, it's easy to tell who's making money and who isnt'. Topped with his signature 'la da da da's, immaculate alliteration and powerful wordplay, it makes for a great intro song. We then move on to 'The Game' featuring Fendi P, an artist on his label. The beat is really what jumps out in this song. The mellow bass and hard 808s really give Curren$y an easy job to just flow over it. I am not really a fan of Fendi's verse or flow, it seems like he lags a beat behind every time. His lyrics are mediocre at best.

'All in the Picture' talks about everyone: 'papers and pistols, drugs and bitches, snakes and real n****s' being in the picture in his life. The heavy repeated kick and hi-hat patterns make it bop and his verses and singing rap make for an easy listen as well. 'Endless Summer' comes next and offers his braggadocious flows over him being a king with diamonds in his crown and how the law will never let him count his millions in peace but that he is always on the terrace ready for when they do come. He only really has one verse and leaves the second verse be the beat with him speaking/singing over the rest, which I found kind of weird and almost as if he was tired.

'Everything' featuring Gunplay has an amazing military-like beat with extremely heavy 808s and kind of a gloomy wavy like melody. Spitta drops a wordplay heavy verse and Gunplay's verse is a soldier like rant filled with guns and mayhem. The 'Andretti Notes' interlude basically talks about how it's different for an artist during a pandemic to make money, so they have to find creative ways to come up with it.

'Road to Riches' featuring Wiz Khalifa, is probably the best song on the tape. Wiz, who is often featured on Curren$y's tapes, is a good friend of Curren$y. The beat is catchy, the sample loop is on point, the verses are well-constructed and the feature fits perfectly. I really love when Curren$y and Wiz come together. 'I Don't Want Much' includes one of my favorite spoken word lines, Spitta goes: 'One of the main reasons we never run out of raps is because we not making shit up, none of these lyrics is fictitious, we only talking about the things we actually do" which makes so much sense: Curren$y puts out so much music in so little time and you have to wonder if some of it is made up at some point, but with his consistency over the last 11 or so years, it can't be anything but authentic.

'Know Em' featuring T.Y. is a heavy beat where he talks about knowing all different kinds of people especially ones who have had their run-ins with the law. T.Y is a little known artist from Cleveland that drops a short but sweet verse, kudos to Spitta for including her. The tape ends with 'Black Mirror', a song that starts off with a beautiful piano and then goes into a gospel based melody with hard kicks hats and of course 808s. The religious vibe accentuates talks about prayer, rosary beads in the mirror and working your way to the top.

Overall, Curren$y is as consistent as he always has been, but to me, this is Fuse's mixtape. The beats are insane, Curren$y is a solid choice to give you 10 songs that are listenable and enjoyable. If you haven't heard the tape, please check it out below. Thanks for reading this review, and as always, stay tuned for more awesome music!
