Artist Spotlight - Subjoi
Today, we are doing things a little bit differently. Instead of doing an album review, we are doing an artist spotlight, which basically means we are putting an artist in the spotlight and giving our opinion on them. Today, our featured artist is Subjoi.
Operating out of Adelaide, Southern Australia, Subjoi (né Jakub Fidos) is an electronic music producer and DJ that specializes in house and the lo-fi genre. His sound is very experimental and it ranges from heavy bass looping with simple vocal loops to harder banging club-based vibes. His latest EP Fairfax shows that range and diversity in sound exactly. Although it is a higher BPM range than what we are usually accustomed to from Subjoi, it is still a joy to listen to nonetheless. You can find the EP tracks below.
My favorite songs of his are 'Flashing Lights' off the 'Flashing Lights EP', 'VIP' off the 'It's You EP' and 'The Way I Feel' single. All 3 songs show the variety in BPM, style, usage of instruments and more. In 'VIP' he uses a sped up lyrical version of No More by Ruff Endz over a jazzy drum and bass loop that is groovy to say the least. In 'Flashing Lights' we get the signature simple vocal loop over a melodically intriguing bass heavy tune that samples and speeds up Jorja Smith's Blue Light. 'The Way I Feel' samples Cruisin' by Smokey Robinson and also speeds it up and adds a heavy rhythmic drum and bass loop that makes you feel like you're cruising, so very apt choice indeed.
I was able to feature Subjoi heavily on my Electronic music playlist so if you enjoyed his music, follow the playlist, I will make sure to be adding more of his music always.
Thanks for reading this artist spotlight, and as always, stay tuned for more awesome music!
